Religion is an insult to human dignity. With or without it you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion. (Steven Weinberg, 1999)
A father has been jailed for life in the UK for murdering his daughter, age 15, in a so-called honour killing. Tulay Goren disappeared in 1999 after having a relationship with a man her family disapproved of. This man, a Mr. Unal, was brought up as a Sunni Muslim while the Gorens were from the Alevi branch of the faith.
Despite coming from places no more than 60 miles apart in Turkey, a relationship between the sects “would not have been tolerated”, and Tulay was killed by Goren “to avoid further humiliation”.
If this very sad story tells us anything, it is how mentally or morally damaged people can get when they allow their thinking to be infected with religious beliefs that make no sense on any level of rational thinking. But again, the real problem staring us in the face here is the gullibility and subsequent vulnerability of the human race to fall for such unsubstantiated non-sense and adopt it lock stock and barrel, by making religious beliefs an integral part of their lives and defining themselves and their cultures through them.
If I didn’t know any better, I would say “Gold help us all!” – but if there is any kind of hope in this situation it is the fact that, fortunately, there is no god, and that we can help ourselves by stopping this kind of idiocy anytime we want to. The question is: when will we finally have the courage to stand up collectively as a species and forever ban the scourge of religion from our thinking …
Don’t hold your breath.
